Collet gives talk about a steroids-free life

Mike Collet, chairperson and founder of Strong Athletes Against Steroids in Park Ridge recently gave a talk to Maine East High School’s Athletic Department about steroids use and abuse. His message is compelling and strong because he had discovered directly the damage steroids do to users.

He is a champion power lifter who in 1972 qualified for the Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

Collet recollected his experience during the 1972 Summer Olympics. Although he was the number one ranked lifter in his class, he was defeated by others who exploited steroids. However, he said that those lifters who used steroids during the 1972 Summer Olympics were either badly ill or now dead.

He told his audience that he is proud of all his accomplishments as a weight lifter, but is most especially proud that he did it without the assistance of steroids. Collet, in his current age, is nonetheless a champion power lifter in his weight class and age category.

Collet provided information through books, magazine articles and newspaper clippings about historical and current steroids use and abuse.

Collet graduated from Main east High 50 years ago. His main message to high school athletes was if you are steroid-free, you are already a champion.

From Pioneer Local:

Maine East Director of Athletics Pat Ryan said: “It was an honor and a privilege to have a speaker with deep ties to Maine East and Maine Township speak so eloquently about staying steroid-free and developing students to reach their full potential. His final comment was that, ‘If you are steroid-free you are already a champion,’ brought an inspiring presentation to it final conclusion.”
